Contact Lens Exams

If you wear eyeglasses regularly and you want to try wearing contact lenses instead, you may wonder what an eye exam is like for these convenient vision correction tools. If you live in McAllen, Edinburg, or the surrounding area, contact Hammond Vision Center to schedule an appointment with one of our optometrists.

Your Eye History Is Explored

If you have been to another optometrist in the past, call them to acquire your documentation so it is forwarded to our office. If you have no history of eye exam appointments, provide us with some information about your current vision and any eye troubles you are experiencing. Our optometrist will discuss your vision issues with you before the examination is conducted to ensure the right treatment is provided.

Checking Your Eye Health

Our staff members will conduct several easy and fast tests to check on your eye health. These are administered using non-invasive equipment to look for issues that require treatment before the contact lenses can be worn. If you would like your pupils dilated for even more testing of your eyes, bring someone to your appointment to drive you home afterward as the drops tend to blur the vision for a few hours after they are administered.

Your Prescription

Just like with a routine eye exam for glasses, our optometrist checks your prescription strength for new contact lenses. You will need to read letters from a chart and use glass plates to sharpen images as needed.

Contact Lens Size

Before we can provide you with contact lenses, a test is performed to determine the size of your irises. This ensures the contact lenses remain in place after they are inserted into your eyes. This test only takes a few seconds to perform.

Sample Lenses

We will provide you with a set of contact lenses for you to try on in our office. If you have never worn contacts in the past, a staff member will walk you through the process of safely inserting and removing these lenses. Cleaning information is also provided to keep your lenses free of debris and safe to wear. We may ask you to return in a few weeks to check over your eyes with the contact lenses in place to determine whether they are providing you with the best vision and comfort.
